Minutes TC-US meeting in Madrid
Minutes of the Meeting of the Technical Committee on Ultrasonics (TC-US) Wednesday, September 5, 2007, 13:00, Madrid, Palacio Municipal de Congresos, Room R-204
1. Opening of the Agenda
The chairman Juan A. Gallego-Juárez welcomed the 22 participants
(list enclosed) and informed about the evolution of the TC-US since its
foundation during the Forum Acusticum 2003 in Seville. The second
official meeting was in the Forum Acusticum 2005 in Budapest, but due
to the coincidence with the World Congress on Ultrasound (WCU05) in
Beijing only a few people attended it. Stephan Radel from the Technical
University of Viena took care of that meeting and reported to the
chairman.
The 3rd official meeting will be in the 5th Forum Acusticum in Paris next year.
J. A. Gallego-Juárez informed about the objectives of the TC-US,
it is an open platform to stimulate joint activities and mutual
cooperations between ultrasonic researchers worldwide to initiate
common projects in research, development and education as well as to
help in organizing structured sessions in ultrasonic or acoustic
congresses. The TC-US should also provide information about new
activities, research results, papers, books, projects, congresses,
workshops, etc.
2. Acoustics 08 Paris - Structured Sessions
Bertrand Dubus, co-chair of the next Acoustics’08 Paris informed
about such joint meeting of the 5th Forum Acusticum, 155th ASA Congress
and the 9th Congrès Français d’Acoustique. It will be held in Paris
from the 29th of June until the 4th of July 2008. There are already
established a number of Special Sessions (SS) but it is still possible
to propose some new SS. It requires two organizers, one from EAA and
other from ASA, and to count on about 5 presentations. People
interested can contact Bertrand Dubus. The deadline for new proposals
is the end of September.
3. ICU 2009 - Santiago de Chile
Ewald Benes, president of the Board of the International Congress
on Ultrasonics (ICU) informed about the next Congress ICU09 that will
be held in Santiago de Chile in January 2009. It will be organized by
Luis Gaete from the University of Santiago de Chile. Ewald Benes
underlined that for the first time an international congress on
ultrasound will be held in the Latin-American subcontinent. Santiago is
a very safe city with modern hotels and good transportation system
(metro and buses). The University of Santiago offers a first class
venue for the meeting. The prices in Santiago are cheaper than in
Europe or in USA and finally January is summer time in Santiago. He
encouraged people to attend the meeting. It will help to the
Latin-American ultrasonic colleagues and will contribute to the
extension of the ultrasonic field in an emergent area.
4. News
J. A. Gallego-Juárez informed that the ICU has become
International Affiliated Member of the International Commission for
Acoustics (ICA) together with other acoustic organizations such as EAA
(European Acoustical Association), FIA (Federación Iberoamericana de
Acústica) the WESPAC (Western Pacific Acoustics Conference, I-INCE
(International Institute of Noise Control Engineering) and IIAV
(International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration). In the future an
ICA Committee (Conference Coordination Committee) will coordinate the
International Conferences related to acoustics in order to avoid
coincidences in the dates or even in the topics.
5. New ideas and/or proposals
J. A. Gallego- Juárez informed about the convenience of making
active the different sub-branches in which the TC-US is organized. In
Seville it was established a working group constituted by several
persons covering different areas of the ultrasonic field (see web
site). However, so far no many specific actions have been carried out.
The use of the web site (http://www.european-acoustics.org/TCs/US) has
to be increased as the mechanism for future initiatives. This site will
be updated soon.
Adriano Alippi proposed to activate the possibility of a Summer
School for Ultrasound in Erice (Sicily) as several years ago was for
Physical Acoustics. It would be necessary to explore the potential
interest of people.
Koen van den Abeele suggested using the web site to publish the
offers of scholarships for students or post-doc positions, as well as
for the information about the European projects in which ultrasonic
people are involved.
J. A. Gallego-Juárez informed that the web site is open for
including such information and therefore he encouraged the members of
the TC-US to send any information or initiative to the chairman of the
TC-US to be included in the web-site. He also suggested to visit the
web site.
6. J. A. Gallego-Juárez finally informed that after five years in
office he would like to pass the chair to another person. He proposed
his colleague Enrique Riera (eriera@ia.cetef.csic.es) from the
Instituto de Acústica, to take care of the TC-US for the next future.
Such proposal is accepted. The chairman thanks the attendance.
