The International Symposium on Underwater Acoustic Measurement

With the increasing demands of marine detection, various underwater acoustic devices have been
developed in which transducers and hydrophones play a key role. As these devices are designed to
operate over different frequency ranges, and work at varied water depths and ambient
temperatures, characteristics of the transducers and hydrophones need to be considered and
measured carefully.
To evaluate the characteristics of transducers accurately, new methods for underwater acoustic
calibration and measurement are continually being developed and more traditional methods are
also becoming viable due to the use of modern numerical algorithms and instruments. The use of
these new and old techniques is providing a more comprehensive assessment of transducer
characteristics than ever before. Over the last 50 years, Hangzhou Applied Acoustics Research
Institute (HAARI) has been engaged in underwater acoustic research with its measurement
laboratory investigating new methods for underwater acoustic measurement. This has led to the
development over the past 20 years of a series of world-class underwater acoustic test and
measurement facilities. Hereby, HAARI invites you to the International Symposium on
Underwater Acoustic Measurement held at the beautiful city, Hangzhou. We hope that this
symposium will become a gathering of underwater acoustic measurement specialists and expertise
from all over the world.
The discussion of the symposium will be around the following aspects:
1. New methods for underwater acoustic calibration;
2. Techniques for underwater acoustic measurement;
3. Techniques for predicting transducer characteristics.

During the symposium, a technical tour of the measurement laboratory at HAARI will be arranged
which will include the world-class underwater acoustic measurement facilities and the unique
optical interferometry tank facilities. There will also be visit to West Lake, which is the origin of
many Chinese legends and poems. The last day of the symposium will be used for holding an
intermediate WG 15 meeting of IEC/TC87, all delegates are encouraged to participate at the
meeting and contribute your suggestions for the revision of IEC standard on underwater acoustics.
We look forward to meeting you in Hangzhou in April 2010.
